12 December 2007 MORGANTON, N.C. -- Joyce Henson, a 60-year-old woman living in a mobile home, shot Deputy Martin Lawing, a 31 year old Burke County sheriff deputy, in the neck when the deputy tried to serve commitment papers on her. The shooting resulted in a 12-hour standoff at her mobile home near Morganton. The elderly woman continued shooting at police until they used 20 canisters of tear gas. Lawing was flown to Carolinas Medical Center in critical condition. Because of the mental illness issue, police refused to release the name of the woman who critically shot a police officer from her mobile home.
